Richard McWhannell was educated at University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the early 1970s where he studied under Rudolf Gopas. Throughout his career, McWhannell has painted both figurative, portrait and landscape paintings, depicting scenes of reality and imagination. Many of his paintings contain landscape references which recall the dramatic landforms of the South Island.
