Death becomes us

Akilah Hammond, Helene Olivia Smith and Michael Springer

Helene Olivia's ceramics, combined with experimental embroidery, contrasts the vibrant colours of organic growth, held in check by smoke fired mono toned frames, illustrating the struggle to survive in a harsh environment.

With the fragility of charcoal and graphite on paper as metaphor to the temporary nature of existence, Springer draws us into a timeless monotone realm inhabited by strange entities.

Akilah Hammond's hand series is an exploration of addiction and harm. These iPad-drawn works focus on themes of loss, anger, and memories left behind. Vibrant cheerful backgrounds serve to sugarcoat the works meanings, to make the truth more comfortable, to avert our eyes from disaster.
